A 16-year-old boy faced what could have been a life-threatening situation after jumping from a 75-foot high-voltage tower in Sylmar, as reported by FOX LA. His jump occurred on a Sunday afternoon during what the Los Angeles Fire Department described as a "psychological emergency."
The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) mounted a rescue operation near 16320 Silver Oaks Drive, just east of the 5 Freeway, the teenager found himself stranded atop the high-voltage structure, according to LAFD's initial alert; Los Angeles Police Department's Crisis Negotiation Team was en route to assist with patient communications, crews preparing the ground for his potential fall with a rescue cushion, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and Southern California Edison were also notified to mitigate any additional risks.
Unfortunately, the boy's descent did not end on the safety device but rather on the hard ground beneath the metal lattice that for a moment served as his refuge and perch. According to a follow-up statement by the LAFD, the teenager "jumped from the tower" and not into the rescue cushion that had been strategically placed by the firefighters. He was then promptly attended by firefighter paramedics and taken to a trauma center for the treatment of injuries, detailed in an update from the LAFD.
Anyone with information or further queries regarding the incident is directed to reach out to the Los Angeles Police Department's Mission Division, as their officers took lead on the scene and can provide additional insights into the unfortunate event.
