In the aftermath of the destruction brought about by Hurricane Helene, the Tennessee National Guard remains a pillar of support and recovery. Over 450 soldiers and airmen are working tirelessly in coordination with local agencies to offer rescue and relief operations across several affected counties in East Tennessee. According to an announcement on the Tennessee Military Department's website, their 24-hour efforts have centered on Carter, Cocke, Greene, Johnson, Unicoi, and Washington counties, providing services that range from search and rescue to the distribution of essential supplies such as food and water.
Comprising of three task forces, the Tennessee National Guard's operations have been extensive and varied. Task Force Aviation, equipped with UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters, has been instrumental in rescuing stranded citizens, delivering over 107,000 pounds of necessities. Having flown 15 reconnaissance missions, their work has been critical to assessing and preparing for repairs of the damaged infrastructure. Meanwhile, Joint Task Force Castle, operating out of various locations and manned by more than 220 engineers, has cleared roadways and other key sites to help restore accessibility, managing to remove an immense volume of debris totaling nearly 4,000 tons.
Further aiding in the recovery process, Joint Task Force Transportation has been deploying their fleet of tactical vehicles to ensure the delivery of over 70,000 pounds of vital supplies and conducting welfare checks, as stated in the Department's press release. Their work also extends to the maintenance of water distribution systems and support of eight essential distribution centers, ensuring that basic hygiene facilities remain operational for those affected by the flooding.
