In the weeks following the tragic event, Atlanta police grappled with a lack of leads until a seemingly unrelated encounter shifted the trajectory of the investigation. On September 21, 2024, an officer on foot patrol along Edgewood Avenue detected "a strong odor of raw marijuana" emanating from a man he passed. The officer subsequently discovered a rolled marijuana cigar on the man's ear and moved to detain him, as stated in a report by FOX 5 Atlanta. It was during this interaction that the officer identified the individual as Dionte Palmer, a man wanted on an active warrant related to the aforementioned homicide case.
Following the connection between the officer’s fortuitous discovery and the outstanding warrant, Palmer was taken into custody and is now being held at the Fulton County Jail on charges of felony murder.
