The community reels in the aftermath of a violent incident following a youth football game at Cardinal Ritter High School, where two men were reportedly shot. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded to the scene around 10:18 p.m. last Saturday, and found two coaches with gunshot wounds, according to IndyStar. IMPD has urgently launched an investigation to truly understand the motivations that led to the altercation that escalated into gunfire.
As per the IMPD, an argument between fans and coaches from opposing teams boiled over in the parking lot after the game, leading to the shooting. The victims have been identified as Travon Smith of the Indy Firehawks, and James Johnson-Beverly from Next Elite 11U, with one in critical condition and the other stable at the time. No children were injured during the incident. The authorities are actively looking to recover security footage or cellphone videos to potentially identify the shooter, as reported by FOX59.
The Indy Firehawks organized a community event the following day, providing food, clothing, and household items to locals. In a statement obtained by IndyStar, team leader Tabatha Hardiman emphasized the role of football as more than a game, but a means to keep children engaged in positive activities and away from harmful influences.
Javell Davis, a coach for the Firehawks, reflected on their intentions to continue to positively influence the young players, “We teach them responsibility, we teach them a lot of integrity — even when nobody’s looking, do the right thing.” According to a report by WISH-TV, Coach Smith's condition was stable, albeit he had to quickly undergo back-to-back surgeries. Smith's role as a coach and mentor is poignant, highlighted by the support and concern shared by team members and fellow coaches—as they gathered, determined to reclaim the sense of community despite the trauma inflicted.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and Cardinal Ritter High School has since revoked the youth league's access to its facilities, emphasizing that the league and its activities were not affiliated with the school.
