Two men were injured, one critically, following a shooting incident at Cardinal Ritter High School after the conclusion of a youth football game on Saturday night. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded to the scene around 10:18 p.m., where they found the victims with gunshot wounds. As reported by WISH-TV, both men were quickly transported to Eskenazi Hospital, one in stable condition and the other in a critical state.
The violence escalated from an argument between adults on the sidelines, which included parents and coaches, according to WTHR. The confrontation, stemming from the game, quickly turned physical and ultimately led to gunfire, causing injuries to the two men. IMPD officers, who were close by when the shooting occurred, rendered immediate aid until IEMS arrived on the scene.
No children were harmed during the incident, and IMPD has stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public. "It's a very sad and unfortunate ending to a football game," IMPD Capt. Rob Rider was quoted by FOX59. He expressed a sentiment that postseason sentiments of a football game should not include such violence, stressing that families and children should expect a safe environment at sports events.
The football game featured younger children, below the age of teenagers and not high school students, but the exact age range of the participants has not been determined by the investigators. The shooting reportedly took place in the school's parking lot, outside of the stadium. IMPD clarified that the incident did not involve Cardinal Ritter High School's officials, parents, students, or staff, and no personnel from the school were present at the time. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and no arrests have been made nor any suspects identified at this time.
