With the approach of the November 5, general election, U.S. Attorney Gregory K. Harris has rolled out the Justice Department's Election Day Program. As reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Central District of Illinois, this initiative aims to uphold the integrity of the electoral process by addressing threats, discrimination, and fraud. Assistant United States Attorneys from the Central District of Illinois have been designated as District Election Officers (DEOs) to oversee election day concerns including voting rights, possible intimidation, and election fraud.

In a statement made by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Harris emphasized the significance of a protected vote, "Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination and to have that vote counted in a fair and free election." Appointed DEOs, in consultation with Justice Department Headquarters in Washington, will handle complaints, and the Springfield, Peoria, Urbana, and Rock Island offices will be equipped with designated contact numbers for the public to report issues.

In the wake of ensuring the public's confidence in the electoral process, the FBI will also have special agents ready to address election-related concerns on election day. The public, in possession of specific information about election fraud or voting rights issues, can reach the local FBI field office at 217-522-9675, as noted by Harris. Reports to the Civil Rights Division can be made directly through a complaint form on their website or by phone.

Finally, Harris reminded the electorate that for immediate emergencies, such as crimes of violence or intimidation at polling places, citizens should contact 911 before reaching out to federal authorities.
