The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has issued a notice for drivers to plan due to the upcoming complete shutdown of southbound I-215 at 2700 South in West Valley City. The closure is scheduled for the upcoming Sunday night, with the interstate set to reopen before Monday morning's rush. Specifically, the roadway will be off-limits starting from 6 p.m. on Sunday, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.
In preparation for the closure, southbound I-215 will narrow to a single lane each night starting Tuesday and continuing through Saturday, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. The cause of this interruption is a necessary repair to the bridge beam at 2700 South, which sustained damage from an incident involving a tractor carrying machinery last year. Although the bridge was deemed secure for vehicles post-accident, authorities determined that repairs would be needed down the line.
Alternative routes have been provided for the motoring public; UDOT suggests drivers exit at SR-201 and then proceed either east towards I-15 or west along Bangerter Highway to circumvent the closure. The transportation department has also signaled that another full closure will happen on Sunday night of October 20, with daytime lane restrictions expected during preparation for the nightly repairs.
This weekend’s closure is part of a larger effort by UDOT to maintain and ensure the safety of Utah’s bridges and roadways. The closure and the subsequent detours mark another stage in Utah's infrastructure upkeep, reminding residents of the often invisible labor that ensures the integrity of the paths they traverse daily. For the most current information on traffic and road conditions, UDOT encourages drivers to stay tuned to local updates and check their website.
