
An officer-involved shooting in Milwaukie has left a young man in critical condition and is currently the subject of an ongoing investigation. On Monday, shortly before one in the morning, Milwaukie Police Department officers pulled over Hunter Newton, 21, for driving on a suspended license. The incident unfolded in the Taco Bell parking lot at 11000 SE Oak Street. Newton, who was the only person in the vehicle, reportedly resisted officers' commands to exit his car and was subsequently shot by the police during the altercation, as detailed in a Clackamas County news release.
The release informs that Newton was unarmed at the time he was shot. Following the shooting, additional law enforcement along with fire and ambulance crews arrived on the scene. Newton received treatment there before being transported to an area hospital, where he remains in a critical condition. The two officers involved, Sergeant Eduardo Sanchez with ten years of experience, and Officer Kwasean Akom, who has been on the force for a year-and-a-half, have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol in such cases.
The investigation into the shooting is being conducted by the Interagency Major Crimes Team in collaboration with the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office. Details about exactly what precipitated the officers' use of their firearms have yet to be determined, according to the same news release.
