Authorities at Gwinnett County Jail dealt with gunfire Monday when an unidentified man, said to have had a previous encounter with law enforcement earlier in the day, fired upon deputies outside the jail facility; the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office has stated that the incident is contained and there's no further threat to public safety.
According to details shared in a FOX5 Atlanta report, the man was described as "agitated" by Sheriff Keybo Taylor, although the reason for his unsettling demeanor remains unclear, he arrived at the jail, displayed erratic behavior and after a confrontation with deputies retreated to his car, obtained a firearm, began shooting, which led to deputies returning fire and injuring him.
The individual in question is currently hospitalized; the specifics surrounding his condition have not been disclosed to the public yet. Following the exchange, which fortunately resulted in no injured deputies, the jail had paused its intake of new prisoners but was reopened by Tuesday morning, as announced on social media by a spokesperson for the sheriff's office.
"The individual continued to demonstrate unusual behavior when exiting our building," Gwinnett County Sheriff Keybo Taylor elucidated during a news conference, "The individual returned to his vehicle, retrieved a firearm and at some point began firing on our deputies," according to a statement acquired by 11Alive. Acknowledging the traumatic nature of such events, Sheriff Taylor committed to providing counseling for those deputies involved and others affected.
In a measure of prudence and the safety of those within and in proximity to the jail after the shooting, the facility had redirected traffic and suspended new intakes, but normal operations have been resumed, and the sheriff's office is once again accepting intakes from local authorities the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called upon to ascertain the details surrounding the shooting involving the deputies.
