The future of Utah's transit is on the track to transformation, with the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) Board of Trustees authorizing a significant $129 million agreement with Stadler Rail for a fleet of modern light rail cars, this procurement will bring an anticipated aesthetic and functional shift to the TRAX system by 2028.
As reported by KSL, UTA's move to acquire 20 new Stadler Citylink light rail cars comes with the potential expansion through an additional 60 vehicles, contingent on future funding and regulatory compliance with the Build America, Buy America Act, the initial batch of cars aims to modernize UTA's services, particularly for generations to lay eyes upon, or rather, for generations to ride the sleek rails of progress into a more connected and accessible world.
In an event scheduled for Friday, UTA executives and Stadler Rail representatives will not only sign the contract ceremoniously but also celebrate the commencement of a significant manufacturing facility in Salt Lake City, bearing testament to the Swiss company's growing roots in Utah since establishing a U.S. base there in 2016, the ceremony symbolizes a junction of international partnership and local investment in the public transit infrastructure, as obtained by KSL.
The funding pitcher came half-full from the Federal Transit Administration's grant, covering the cost for the initial 20 Citylink cars, vehicles promising a dip in height for greater accessibility, a feature that trustees, including Beth Holbrook, praise for its timeliness, especially with sights set on the impending 2034 winter Olympics, "So I’m excited to see this. I think that this is a great opportunity," Holbrook said, as noted by Utah News Dispatch.
The deal to phase out the 25-year-old TRAX trains comes amid a 17 percent increase in the system's ridership this year and Fox has hopes tethered to a burgeoning transit network, which includes the proposed Orange Line that would bridge the Salt Lake International Airport with the University of Utah, thus expanding UTA's reach and bolstering the vital veins of commerce and community that depend on it every day to sustain their pulse, as per ABC4.
