A man from Verona has been accused of scattering flyers with inflammatory messages in the yards of Donald Trump supporters. This scene has brought political tensions into the fore of a suburban Pittsburgh community. The flyers, bearing messages that read "NAZI’s 4 TRUMP…MAKE AMERICA 1930s GERMANY AGAIN …. 2024-TIL DEATH," have been classified by the Verona Police Department as harassment towards residents with pro-Trump signs and flags.
According to WTAE, the suspect, identified as 71-year-old Philip Heffler, was captured on video surveillance using his Giant Eagle Advantage card to buy fried chicken, which inadvertently led to his arrest after a woman found one of the offending flyers attached to a used chicken bag from the same store. The Verona Police identified Heffler through this connection, linking him to the distressing activity in the neighborhood.
The messaging, which drew repudiation from residents, included symbols deeply offensive and historically charged. Tracy Smith, one such homeowner who discovered the flyer in her yard, stated, as per CBS News Pittsburgh, "It's ridiculous to compare the two. I think it's a slap in the face to Jewish people to compare Trump to Hitler." Smith's security cameras caught Heffler allegedly distributing the flyers from his vehicle.
Upon his confession, Heffler appeared remorseful, asserting he did not anticipate getting caught for his actions. When questioned by the officers, he launched into a tirade against the former president before apologizing for what he had done.
