A Virginia resident was apprehended for his alleged participation in the January 6 Capitol breach, facing accusations that include assaulting police officers and several misdemeanor charges, as per an announcement made by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia; John Paul Bordeaux, aged 36 and hailing from Floyd, Virginia, now confronts a federal criminal complaint that places him in the thick of the disorder that played out when Congress was in session on that day in early 2021.
Bordeaux's charges encapsulate two felonies: civil disorder and the act of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers, he is also charged with multiple misdemeanors ranging from entering and remaining in restricted spaces to engaging in violent behavior in those zones, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Documents presented in court allege that on January 6, at approximately 2:10 p.m., Bordeaux was observed yelling at law enforcement while police were attempting to manage the burgeoning crowd with tear gas and other control tactics; he was allegedly captured on police body cameras rallying other rioters, and at around 2:33 p.m., he supposedly charged at a police line and was seen striking an officer's riot shield multiple times.
Further allegations include Bordeaux being struck down twice by an officer using the riot shield yet continuing to assault, following which the crowd surged, forcing law enforcement to retreat; Bordeaux's legal troubles intensified when he purportedly attempted to pry open an entrance to the Upper West Terrace of the Capitol and beckoned others to aid him, the U.S. Department of Justice reports.
