A water main break disrupted services at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain on Friday evening, leaving the medical facility without water and causing traffic delays in the area. The break was reported at the intersection of Centre Street and Allandale Street—precisely where the hospital is located—according to a statement just before 7:30 p.m. from Boston Water and Sewer Commission obtained by 7NEWS.
The hospital confirmed, via a traffic notice on its website, that National Grid was conducting work nearby when the incident occurred, however, gas services remained intact despite the water woes; James Faretra of the Boston Water and Sewer Commission had earlier stated, "The main is off and crews are accessing the situation, we believe no residences are without water however there may be possible disruptions and water discoloration," in comments reported by WCVB.
Boston police issued alerts about the significant impact on traffic stemming from the incident. Concurrently, hospital officials promptly ensured measures were in place to mitigate the impact on patient care, stating early Saturday morning: “Last evening, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital experienced temporary disruption to water service due to a pipe that was damaged during off-site utility work unrelated to the hospital. Thanks to the tireless efforts of our staff, there was minimal impact to patient care and we have resumed normal operations," according to a statement from hospital officials.
Despite the unexpected challenge, District Fire Chief Bob Dowling reported the hospital was maintaining care for approximately 135 patients at the time of the incident, and the response from municipal partners and staff was lauded for their quick and effective handling of the situation; "We extend our deepest gratitude to our municipal partners for their steadfast efforts and swift response which ensured a rapid resolution to this event," the hospital expressed in a statement obtained by WCVB. Meanwhile, residents were cautioned about potential water service interruptions and water discoloration as crews continued to respond to the aftermath of the water main break.
