Motorists in Arizona are in for a significant disruption this weekend, with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) announcing the closure of eastbound Interstate 10 between US 60 and Ray Road. The closure which is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, and extends until 4 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7, is set for paving, pavement marking, and sign work to be completed, as reported by ADOT. This construction effort is part of a larger I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project, which seeks to improve the bustling freeway that serves as a vital artery for the region.
Traffic detours will be a necessary inconvenience for drivers, with eastbound Loop 202 and US 60 to southbound Loop 101 and westbound Loop 202 being advised routes to bypass the closure. According to ADOT, the installation aims to reduce travel times, improve airfield access, and cater to future regional growth. Ramp closures will impact the westbound US 60 ramp to eastbound I-10, the HOV ramps connecting I-10 and US 60, and several eastbound I-10 on-ramps at Broadway, Baseline, Elliot, and Warner roads. The eastbound US 60 on- and off-ramps at Mill Avenue will also be closed during this period.
For travelers seeking to avoid the construction zone, an alternative was provided where West Valley drivers can utilize Loop 202, the South Mountain Freeway. Starting from I-10 and 59th Avenue, Loop 202 offers a route that reconnects with I-10 south of Chandler Boulevard, potentially easing some of the anticipated traffic congestion.
The regional significance of the improvement project was underscored by its inclusion in the Maricopa Association of Governments’ Regional Transportation Plan. Funded by the half-cent sales tax passed in 2004 through Proposition 400, the initiative was formulated to confront the challenges of peak-hour traffic and the impending demands of population growth.
