A woman and a juvenile were injured in a shooting incident in Binghampton, Memphis, that police believe was accidental. The Memphis Police Department responded to an emergency call just after 2 p.m. Tuesday, locating the victims on the 2900 Block of Mimosa Avenue. An adult female, identified as a 22-year-old woman, was taken to Regional One in critical condition, while a 10-month-old girl suffered non-critical injuries, according to WREG. At present, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.

Both victims were rushed to Regional One Health, with the 22-year-old woman seriously injured, and the 10-month-old child sustaining less severe wounds, FOX13 Memphis reports. The nature, of the incident suggests that the shooting was not intentional, with preliminary findings pointing to an accidental discharge as the cause.

As of October 1, there have been nearly 150 reported incidents at the complex where the shooting occurred, these incidents ranging from assault to weapons law violations, based on data from the Memphis Public Safety Map. Yet, the number of accidental shootings involving children within this spectrum of violence remains ambiguous. Action News 5 notes that police did not have “information on hand” about how many such incidents occurred this year.

At least five accidental shootings involving minors have taken place around the city in 2024. Starting with a 5-year-old in East Memphis who accidentally shot himself in January, a 3-year-old tragically shooting their mother in Cordova during February, a 4-year-old in South Memphis, and a 14-year-old shot in Westwood in July after another teenager mistakenly believed, the gun they brandished had the safety engaged.
