A tragic event unfolded Thursday morning in Crown Point, Indiana, as a school bus and an SUV collided head-on resulting in the death of a woman. The collision occurred around 8:30 a.m. on the 3300 block of West 133rd Avenue, in what appears to be a series of unfortunate events leading to the devastating outcome, as reported by CBS Chicago.
The bus, which was initially heading west swerved off the roadway, striking a mailbox. The bus driver then, when overcorrecting to the left, collided with the oncoming Ford Edge SUV. The SUV's driver, identified as 53-year-old Lisa Smith, was airlifted to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition but later succumbed to her injuries, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
There were no students on board the school bus during the incident, as confirmed by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Trying to avoid the collision but couldn’t, the bus monitor on board was unharmed, and the bus driver also needed hospital evaluation. The reasons behind this crash remain shrouded as the Lake County Sheriff’s Department pursues its investigation into the cause, as explained in a report by WGN-TV.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Crown Point Community School Corporation conveyed its condolences, stating, "Our team is devastated to learn that yesterday’s accident resulted in a fatality, and our hearts are with the individual’s family and friends." The school corporation also affirmed its commitment to fully cooperate with authorities in the ongoing investigation, promising to "continue to work closely with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department as they conduct their investigation."
