A pedestrian was fatally struck in a collision on US Hwy 11 in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, just before midnight on Wednesday. The victim, identified as 61-year-old Samuel Harris Jr. of Slidell, died at the scene, according to a press release by the Louisiana State Police Troop L. The incident occurred near 5th Avenue, where the driver of a 2008 Nissan Titan, traveling northbound, struck Harris.
In the ongoing investigation, the driver of the Nissan, who was uninjured and buckled up at the time of the accident, cooperated with authorities, with toxicology samples being collected from both individuals involved. Louisiana State Police are still trying to determine why the Nissan hit Harris, who was walking in the northbound lane when the collision happened.
The news of this tragic event reinforces the perennial warnings issued to motorists and pedestrians alike. The importance of vigilance on roadways is crucial, especially at night. Tragedies, like this one, are haunting reminders that both parties must actively watch over their surroundings to prevent such accidents.
The State Police recommends pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing after dark. Walking on roadways in unlit areas, where motorists might not expect pedestrian presence, poses significant risks. Crash investigations, like the one involving Harris, commonly reveal that precautions, such as wearing appropriate attire at night or walking facing traffic, could help to avoid accidents. Pedestrians are encouraged to cross roads only in designated, well-lit areas. They are also advised to operate under the assumption that they are invisible to oncoming drivers, as per the Louisiana State Police community outreach message.
