As temperatures drop and winter sets its sights upon us, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced that State Route 67 leading to Grand Canyon National Park's North Rim will be closed starting December 2, a move signaling the depth of the coming winter. This portion of the road, connecting travelers to one of nature's marvels, will be off-limits due to the heavy snowfall that the region typically faces, with over 9 feet of snow in a season being standard fare.
Those planning trips around this time should note that US 89A, at the junction with SR 67 in Jacob Lake, will remain open. Historically, State Route 67 is back in service around mid-May, in tandem with the reopening of North Rim facilities, according to ADOT. In the meantime, winter travelers are not left in the cold when it comes to advice from ADOT, with a list of precautions and preparations, such as packing a car safety kit, staying fueled up, and driving sensibly in less predictable weather.
These measures, detailed by ADOT, are essential for any motorist braving the roads in wintertime – emphasizing the importance of driving defensively and respecting the plow. Motorists are encouraged to slow down, show patience, and importantly envision their journey not just as travel but as movement through potentially dangerous elements.
Preparation includes packing a vehicle with winter essentials like warm clothing, snacks, and a charged cell phone for emergencies. "If a travel app suggests taking an unpaved road, your settings may be off. Don’t risk getting stuck in a remote area," advises ADOT, emphasizing the importance of planning and using reliable resources to check weather and road conditions.
Highway conditions are available on ADOT's Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov or through the AZ511 app for Apple and Android devices. Checking these sources before traveling can help ensure a safe journey.
