An alleged kidnapping event led to an unusual police chase through Los Angeles and Orange Counties on Saturday, ending with the suspect in custody, ABC7 reports. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers engaged in a protracted, extremely slow-speed follow of a white Ford Mustang with Nevada plates, a situation stemming from a kidnap claim initiated a little past 6:45 p.m. near the I-5 and I-605 freeway interchange.
The chase ensued despite the Mustang running over spike strips set by the CHP, resulting in flat tires that slowed the vehicle—at times traveling no more than five miles per hour—and leading to a substantial backup on the 405 freeway, creating a "traffic nightmare," CBS News described the events. Through the slow procession, the unknown driver continued the pursuit with the victim inside the car the entire time and finally came to a halt near the Springdale Street ramp around 8:30 p.m.
As captured by helicopter news cameras and scores of onlookers on a nearby overpass, the chase's end saw officers surrounding the vehicle, guns drawn, as the suspect and the female passenger—initially reported to have embraced—exited the car. The man surrendered to authorities, and the woman, found unharmed, spoke to police afterward, as per CBS News.
