Cherokee County has been marred by a tragic incident as a pedestrian was fatally struck in a hit-and-run accident involving an Amazon delivery truck yesterday evening. The collision occurred on Cumming Highway near Jordan Lane around 6:30 p.m., where deputies from the Cherokee Sheriff's Department responded to the emergency call.
Upon their arrival to the grim scene, they discovered the lifeless form of Sandra Fitts, 79, of Canton. The subsequent investigation led to a damaged Amazon truck found on nearby Bishop Drive, with indicators that implicated it in the accident. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, authorities arrested 24-year-old driver London Best of Alpharetta after determining that the Amazon vehicle he was operating was responsible for the victim's death.
London Best now faces serious charges including first-degree vehicular homicide and hit-and-run resulting in death. He is being held without bond, as per the report by 11Alive. The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Unit is spearheading an ongoing investigation into this fatal event.
An official statement from Amazon was provided to reporters where Austin Stowe, a company spokesperson, expressed the corporate giant's sorrow: "We’re deeply saddened by this incident, and our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. We’ll support local police as they investigate." The statement, obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, also noted that Best is currently ineligible to carry out deliveries for Amazon pending the outcome of the inquiry.
