The Arizona Department of Education has formally updated the State Auditor General on the steps it has taken to strengthen oversight of the Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) program. This comes after concerns surfaced in 2023 regarding the management of the program, which provides funds for parents to use toward private school tuition or other education-related expenses for their children, as reported by the Arizona Department of Education.
In a recent letter, the ADE outlined the corrective measures it has implemented. These measures are designed to bolster the program's internal controls and address the two main issues that became points of contention last year. However, details on the nature of these concerns were not specified in the correspondence, a copy of which was made public.
According to the letter, the department has been diligent in ensuring that ESA funds are used appropriately and efficiently. "ADE implemented key internal controls over ESA program functions and processes," an excerpt from the letter states. This move is part of an ongoing effort by the ADE to fortify the integrity of the scholarship program and reassure stakeholders of its transparency and accountability.
For more information on the measures taken by the ADE to improve the Empowerment Scholarship Account program, the public can access a copy of the letter on the department's official communication page.
