If you've been cruising through downtown Cincinnati hoping to zip north on Pendleton Street, you'll need to reroute your plans through the end of the year. In a bit of city-shaping maintenance, the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSD) is doing some heavy lifting on underground pipes, leading to the closure of Pendleton Street to northbound traffic from Reading Road to E. 12th Street, starting November 14. The closure is expected to last up to six weeks, so you'll want to watch for the detour signs posted to guide you around the blockage.
The necessity of this inconvenience stems from installing new sewers along Reading Road and rehabilitating existing sewers, which will be modernized using a cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) lining process. According to a statement from the City of Cincinnati’s official website, these updates are giving the infrastructure beneath our feet a new lease on life, with an expected completion date by summer 2025. However, this comes with the provision pending the temperaments of weather and on-the-ground conditions known to be as unpredictable as a midwestern storm.
Meanwhile, traffic continues to be an exciting dance, with additional lane restrictions already in place along Reading Road between Sycamore and 12th streets. As construction work progresses, motorists should keep their eyes peeled for more changes, like lane restrictions on Reading Road stretching from 12th Street to Elsinore Place. This means that getting from point A to B might feel like traveling through a labyrinth designed by city planners, but rest assured, it's with the hope of a smoother, less congested future.
The hands behind the work are those of Ford Development Company, contracted by MSD. They diligently work from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, with Friday as an as-needed workday. If you need more information—or just want to vent about your disrupted commute—MSD Customer Service can be contacted at (513) 244-1300 (option 5) or reached by email at [email protected].
