Austin is charging up its commitment to renewable energy with a new program by Austin Energy that's ready to flip the switch on how solar power is harvested and utilized in the city. The Solar Standard Offer program, which is set to hit the ground running in December, is designed to tap into the vast potential of rooftop spaces across Austin, leveraging the area's abundant sunshine. Property owners will now have the option to host solar panels or lease their rooftops to solar developers, with the energy generated being sold back to Austin Energy.
Businesses in Austin will see a surge in clean energy access without the barrier of upfront costs, democratizing sustainable practices. Whether they have a sprawling rooftop or ample parking lot space, commercial property owners are positioned to rake in passive income immediately, simply by leasing out these areas. According to City of Austin recent announcement, "The Solar Standard Offer is a game-changer," said Tim Harvey, Austin Energy Solar Program Manager. "This program empowers property owners, solar developers and the Austin community to work together toward a carbon-free future. It’s a major opportunity to meet our climate goals and create long-term value for everyone involved."
Compensation rates under this program are pegged at $0.1124 per kWh for systems under 1 MW, and for larger systems, a rate of $0.0841 per kWh, set by Austin Energy. The utility acknowledges these rates as a reflection of the cost-saving benefits they will reap by contracting with local solar providers. Additionally, the rates are subject to adjustment every three years to keep up with competitive standards.
Austin Energy's initiative isn't solely about profit. The Community Solar Program, which aims to serve low-income residents among the broader community, is expected to benefit from the increased solar energy production notably. Scheduled to begin in early December, the program will launch with specialized training sessions for solar contractors—tapping into the enthusiasm surrounding clean energy, ensuring that local businesses are well-equipped to handle the anticipated increase in demand for solar installations.
Those interested in joining the movement as a Participating Solar Contractor, System Owner, or Host can find more information about application procedures on Austin Energy’s website. The official roll-out and application period starts on December 9th, promising a brighter and more sustainable future for Austin's energy landscape.
