Following swift action by the BART Police and an alert Station Agent, a 34-year-old man identified as Jovany Portades has been taken into custody in connection to the stabbing incident that unfolded on a train headed to Antioch. The apprehension occurred yesterday at around 2 p.m. at the Fruitvale Station, according to a social media post by the BART Police Department. Officers were to quickly respond to the Station Agent's contact, arresting Portades without incident and extending gratitude to all involved in the suspect's capture.
Previously, the BART Police had released a description of the suspect they were then searching for, an approximately 5-foot-8 Asian male with black braided hair worn in a knot and a mustache. Dressed in a black jacket with an orange liner and a black shirt emblazoned with a white logo. the suspect was last seen carrying a black duffle bag. "BART’s network of more than 4,000 surveillance cameras played a key role in capturing the image of the suspect and then the arrest," as per the BART Police Department.
The incident that prompted this investigation occurred last Saturday morning as the train neared the 24th Street/Mission Station. Quoted from a Hoodline report, “The victim, a 54-year-old woman, was reportedly stabbed in an unprovoked assault at around 8:10 a.m.” After the violence, services were temporarily disrupted at the 24th St./Mission station from 8:40 to 9:25 a.m. as officers conducted their preliminary investigation.
