Otra, the upscale Mexican restaurant that has anchored the corner of Haight Street since 2021, will close its dining room in early December 2026, owners Nick Cobarruvias and Anna Sager Cobarruvias have confirmed. The husband-and-wife team says the decision comes down to timing rather than crisis, with plans already in motion to redirect their energy toward family and their growing salsa business.
The couple signed the lease for the space at 628 Haight St. back in January 2020, a milestone Hoodline first reported when the location was still known as the former home of Sushi Raw, which had closed by then. Otra didn't open its doors until May 2021, according to The San Francisco Standard, which first reported the closure news and to whom the Cobarruviases confirmed the decision. Nick Cobarruvias told the outlet the closure isn't tied to any single crisis. “There's no real smoking gun,” he said. “It's good to go out before you're forced out, so to speak.”
The restaurant grew out of the couple's earlier venture, Son's Addition, a contemporary American spot at 2990 24th St. in the Mission that ran from 2017 until 2021, according to SFist's reporting on the owners' culinary background. That closure came the same year Otra opened. Otra also opened that year.

The restaurant opened in May 2021. Staff learned about the closure early this week, per the Standard's report, and the owners hope Otra continues in some form — they just aren't sure yet what that looks like. The couple has not announced what comes next.
For now, the bigger draw is Chingonas, the couple's salsa macha line. With two kids and a retail brand to scale, the couple is choosing to lean into consumer packaged goods over the grind of a nightly dining room — a trade-off increasingly familiar to independent restaurateurs weighing scalability against the fixed costs of a physical space.
Lower Haight's Dining Boom, With Otra at the Center
Otra's five-year run coincided with the Lower Haight's maturation into a dining destination, per the Standard's reporting. Bar Jabroni opened next door in 2024, while cocktail bar Stoa opened kitty-corner from Otra in 2023 and went on to earn national recognition when beverage outlet Punch named it one of the top bars in the country in 2024, according to the SF Standard's local dining coverage. Three blocks away, Jules opened in May 2025, a pizza hot spot, according to Resy's coverage of the opening.

What's Next for 628 Haight Street
Otra's owners attribute part of the timing behind the closure to an unusually slow summer slowdown, a pattern that has squeezed margins at restaurants across the Bay Area grappling with high fixed costs and seasonal dips in business, the Standard reported. The broader restaurant landscape continues to contend with those pressures. Even so, the closure at 628 Haight St. is planned. A transition at the address will follow Otra's last plate of tacos in December.
