In a patrol operation, a Brentwood police officer apprehended an individual found with a loaded handgun during a standard area check last week. The detainee, identified as 43-year-old Derrick Garcia from nearby Antioch, was already sought for a drug-related misdemeanor. The discovery of a loaded firearm in his backpack escalated the charges due to his status as a convicted felon, illicitly in possession of a weapon.
The arrest took place at the intersection of Lone Tree Way near Highway 4, a sequence of events leading to the eventual discovery of the handgun. Garcia, having the misdemeanor warrant, did not foresee the patrol encountering leading to a search that would unveil his possession of drugs and, after that, the loaded handgun he was not lawfully permitted to carry; thus, he was placed under arrest for being a felon in possession of a loaded firearm.
A statement released by the City of Brentwood - Police Department provided the arrest details, with the standard practice of a person with an active warrant leading to a search and unexpected seizure of an illicit firearm.
