Brookline man, Robert Kawada, age 43, faces serious charges after a Middlesex Grand Jury indictment, detailed by Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Watertown Police Chief Justin Hanrahan. Kawada's charges include poisoning, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a pregnant person, and assault and battery on a household or family member. The Middlesex District Attorney's Office reports that Kawada allegedly deceived a woman he was dating into taking medication that would end her pregnancy.
The case unfolded as Kawada, upon learning of the woman's pregnancy, allegedly ordered the abortion-inducing medications Misoprostol and Mifepristone online using another female's identity. Devised to secure the victim's trust, Kawada recommended she take iron pills, leveraging the medical background of his father, an Obstetrics and Gynecology doctor. The defendant went as far as to allegedly orchestrate a call to the victim from someone purporting to be a nurse, alleging low iron based on recent test results.
The pressure continued when Kawada visited the victim's home, referencing the nurse's phone call, and provided her with what he claimed were the iron supplements. These pills resulted in a miscarriage, leading to the discovery that they were, in fact, the drugs intended to terminate the pregnancy. The victim later described the pill as consistent with one inducing miscarriage, revealing a grim twist in trust and deception.
The plot thickened as the investigation exposed that the phone number from the supposed nurse did not belong to any medical facility, and it was discovered that Kawada had previously called this number. While Kawada awaits arraignment in Middlesex Superior Court, prosecutors Jacob McCrindle and Kailey Verni will lead the case, assisted by Victim Witness Advocate Arianne Dubina.
