A police confrontation at a Conyers gas station has resulted in the fatal shooting of a 40-year-old man by local law enforcement. The incident took place early Wednesday morning and has prompted an ongoing investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). Jesse Roach of Carrollton has been identified as the deceased individual.
Officials report that Roach was involved in a disturbance inside the convenience store before the shooting occurred. After refusing to leave the premises, he was approached by police officers at the scene. Despite the officers' attempts to resolve the situation, it is stated by Lt. Quantavis Garcia of the Conyers Police Department that Roach attempted to flee in his vehicle and subsequently opened fire on the officers, which led to the police shooting.
According to the FOX 5 Atlanta report, prior to the deadly shooting, officers had unsuccessfully attempted to use a stun gun on Roach.
During the altercation, Roach was most times behind the wheel, as explained by Lt. Garcia, resulting in property damage at the gas station, including a shattered back window of Roach's truck and the vehicle crashing into the store's front. After being rushed to a hospital, Roach succumbed to his injuries, confirmed by authorities. His truck, having crashed into a nearby business, was later part of a secondary investigation conducted by the Georgia State Patrol.
No further details have been disclosed regarding the initial argument between the store clerk and Roach. The officers involved were unharmed and the incident marks the 75th officer-involved shooting case the GBI has been called to investigate this year. The Conyers Police Department is also conducting its own internal review as per standard protocol. The department's use of a drone to capture the scene's aftermath will be part of the material provided to the GBI. As the investigation continues, reported by WSB-TV, it remains unclear what exactly sparked the fatal confrontation.
