Casa Grande Community Honors Memory of Teen Cheerleader with Foundation and Scholarship

The community is still mourning the loss of Hailey Stephens, a 17-year-old cheerleader from Casa Grande Union High School, who was killed by a stray bullet at a house party nearly a year ago. Her mother, Vanessa Stephens, has honored Hailey's memory by organizing a celebration of life event that also served as a fundraiser for the Hailey Lynn Stephens Foundation, according to ABC 15.

The foundation, rooted in Hailey's own aspirations and dedication to academics and cheerleading, provides college scholarships to students from Hailey's alma mater, with two scholarships already awarded this year. Hailey's mother remembers her daughter's humble nature and is committed to using the Hailey Lynn Stephens Foundation to help other students achieve their college dreams, turning Hailey's unfulfilled goals into opportunities for others, she tells ABC 15 in a statement.

Commemorating Hailey's impact, Casa Grande witnessed a heartwarming sight as pink balloons, inscribed with messages of love and remembrance, were released into the sky, as friends and family members, many donning shirts adorned with Hailey's image, came together in a display of solidarity and sorrow, an attendee shared with 12 News, speaking to Hailey's infectious laugh and dedication to both academic and cheerleading excellence. The memorial served as reflective pause on the incident, bringing fresh attention to the juvenile responsible for her death, who was recently sentenced to custody until the age of 18.

Vanessa Stephens has grappled with the emotions surrounding the sentencing, acknowledging the state laws that shaped the outcome.
