Chandler's Municipal Airport, a cornerstone of the city’s aviation history and a key player in its economic framework, has embarked on ambitious plans to reshape its future. Detailed in a recent City Council work session, these plans entail a comprehensive strategic business strategy and an upcoming community impact study aimed at broadening the airport's reach and functionality, according to the City of Chandler.
The discussion, led by Airport Manager Ryan Reeves, outlined Chandler Airport's longstanding presence since 1928 and current stature as the nation's 17th busiest general aviation airport, as reported by the City of Chandler. Hosting more than 440 aircrafts, with a substantial amount of developable land, Chandler Municipal Airport serves as a strategic hub fueling Chandler Airpark, the city's flourishing economic corridor.
Recent infrastructure improvements, aided by federal and state grants exceeding $5 million, have prepared the airport for anticipated growth. These enhancements include upgrades to the control tower's equipment, a new wildlife perimeter fence, and reconstructed pavement serving numerous hangars. Such developments have also addressed operational aspects like emergency access and aircraft observation, ensuring the facility stays ahead of the curve in aviation services.
The strategic business plan in question, a first in Chandler Municipal Airport's 76-year history, is said to revolve around three core phases: preparation, development, and implementation. With the current focus on preparation and scope of work, Reeves highlighted the airport's strong points, such as customer service and facility maintenance, while acknowledging areas needing improvement like the marketing program and hangar availability, as per the City of Chandler.
The financial reshaping includes restructuring airport financial statements and revisiting airside fees with an eye on market parity. The ambitious enterprise is also not taking the community for granted, as evidenced by the proposed comprehensive community impact study set for 2025. This study will explore the implications of a possible runway extension and other development initiatives on the local environment and economy, all while maintaining a positive relationship with the City of Chandler residents.
With a view to fostering transparency and opening dialogue with the public, airport staff have been proactive in engaging with various organizations, including the Arizona Airports Association and the Greater Phoenix Economic Council. Meanwhile, the City Council will continue to receive updates on the progressing strategic business plan and the impact study, both key to Chandler Municipal Airport's trajectory towards heightened service and increased financial self-sufficiency.
