The Chicago Bears, in association with Jewel-Osco, have set into motion their 36th annual coat drive, an initiative aiming to collect over 25,000 coats to assist those grappling with the city's brutally cold winters. According to a report by WGN-TV, from now through February 10, fans and patrons are encouraged to drop off new or gently used coats at any of the 190 participating Jewel-Osco grocery stores throughout Illinois.
In partnership with The Salvation Army and Shur-way Movers, the effort is bolstered by the active role of former Chicago Bear Jerry Azumah, who commenced his participation in the coat drive after joining the team in 1999. Launching the event at a North Side Jewel-Osco, as reported by FOX 32 Chicago, Azumah stated, "When I first started playing back in ‘99, I got involved in it, just spearheading the initiative and getting coats to the community." Azumah, helping to spread the word, gave an insight into the drive's impact, saying, "It’s day one. It’s the beginning. I know it’s empty now, but over the decades, we’ve raised thousands and thousands of coats, and really helped the less fortunate in the community."
Myrian Phelps, a service specialist at Jewel-Osco, echoed the sentiment of community engagement and support, noted by last year's collection of more than 18,000 coats. She stated, "The customers absolutely step up and we have a great customer base. We just love all the support. It’s an absolutely wonderful feeling giving back." Phelps said in a statement, as detailed by FOX 32 Chicago.
Those in need of a coat can seek assistance from The Salvation Army. Major KK Matthews highlighted the joy recipients experience, "They get to pick. It’s like kids in a candy shop," she mentioned, citing a huge variety of stylish and warm winter coats available. For further details on how to obtain a coat, the Salvation Army Holiday Hotline at (773) 205-3690 is open for inquiries, as per the details shared by WGN-TV.
“We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of Bears fans year after year,” Tony Medlin was quoted expressing gratitude by WGN-TV. "Their continued support allows us to make a real difference in the lives of so many. Every single coat donated helps protect someone from the harsh Chicago winter, offering not just warmth, but a sense of security and comfort. Together, we are keeping thousands of individuals warm and safe, and that’s something we can all be proud of."
