Concern is mounting in Clarksville as the police department reports a spike in motorcycle crashes over the past year. The Clarksville Police Department (CPD) has responded to 159 motorcycle crashes, leading to 11 fatalities and over a hundred injuries. These incidents, dominated by riders aged 25 or younger, reveal a grim reality: our roads are a stage for an unfolding tragedy where youth and inexperience play lead roles.

In an effort to curb these accidents, CPD has intensified enforcement, issuing 774 speeding citations and 755 written warnings in the last three months. "It's a risk to ride a motorcycle, just like today it's a risk to drive a car in downtown Nashville," Bubba Boswell, president of Boswell Harley-Davidson in Nashville, told News 2. Increasing vehicular traffic, he explains, means drivers often overlook motorcycles. The same sentiment is echoed by the CPD, highlighting distracted driving, unsafe lane changes, and, speeding as the primary culprits in these accidents.

According to the CPD's reports covered by FOX17, in addition to fatalities, the past year saw 93 crashes causing 103 injuries and 56 resulting solely in property damage. Younger motorcyclists have been disproportionately affected, accounting for 92 of the total crashes. This has resulted in 53 injuries and 9 of the 11 fatalities within this demographic. The CPD pleads with drivers to "slow down, stay vigilant, and make a habit of double-checking for motorcycles before changing lanes or making turns."

With the number of incidents already eclipsing previous years, awareness and diligence from both motorcyclists and vehicle drivers are essential. "It is a domino effect that affects police, firefighters, EMS, and then families that get the notification: your family member is deceased because of something that's preventable,", Scott Beaubien, the public information officer for the CPD, told News 2. Critical efforts by the department to enhance road safety through enforcement are a call to action for the community to rally toward a safer environment for all.
