The Indianapolis Colts are facing an offensive crisis after their 21-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. A switch to veteran QB Joe Flacco instead of Anthony Richardson didn't improve the offense, which was considered the worst of the season. Despite three takeaways and a defensive score, the offense remained out of sync.
The Colts’ decision to switch to Joe Flacco was meant to bring stability to the offense. Head Coach Shane Steichen said in a statement obtained by Sports Illustrated, "(I) Feel that Joe gives us the best chance to win right now." However, Sunday’s game against the Vikings raised more questions than answers. With less than 200 passing yards and only six trips past the Vikings’ 30-yard line, the Colts may need to come up with a new plan fast.
"I wasn't good enough for the guys today," Steichen told FOX 59. Steichen repeated his belief that he's responsible for the team's struggles. The Colts set season lows in several areas, failing to even reach the red zone once during the game.
Matt Gay’s two field goals were the only points Flacco could produce, aside from Moore’s defensive score. With tough games against teams like the Bills and Lions ahead, it’s unclear if Flacco will continue as the starter. Steichen has not committed to future lineup decisions but remains hopeful for improvement. When asked about Flacco’s status, Steichen said, "Right now, yes," as per FOX 59 report.
The Colts also struggled in the run game, with Jonathan Taylor managing just 48 yards on 13 carries, according to WTHR.
"Anytime you have a day like we had tonight, you're probably surprised a little bit that you weren't able to get it going," Flacco said in a statement to FOX 59. This inability to establish a running game only added to the offense’s struggles as the Colts searched for solutions and tried to keep their playoff hopes alive.
