Residents of Coon Rapids are set to have their say on a proposed zoning ordinance amendment, one that could reshape the geographic limits of the city's burgeoning cannabis business. The amendment, if enacted, would confine state-licensed cannabis retail businesses to specific commercial zones, while keeping production in the Industrial Zoning District, as reported by the City of Coon Rapids. The decision is not simply about land use, it is about who gets to participate in the green rush, about who gets left out, and about how space shapes the future of communities.
The details of the proposal were outlined in a publication on the City of Coon Rapids' official website, which indicates that cannabis retail would be limited to Community Commercial, General Commercial, Regional Shopping, PORT Wellness, and PORT Evergreen zoning districts.
Conversely, the River Rapids Overlay District would face restrictions, with the PORTs Wellness and Evergreen as exceptions. The public hearing is set for November 21, signaling a clear path for residents to voice their concerns or support, as per the City of Coon Rapids.
