The streets of Downtown Mesa are set to turn into a winter wonderland as the annual Merry Main Street event, presented by AT&T, swings into its tenth year. Kicking off on November 29 and running through January 11, this East Valley holiday tradition brings with it a slew of festive activities for all to partake in. According to the city's press release, the official start is marked by performances from the Mesa City Band against the backdrop of the towering Mesa Christmas Tree at Main Street and Macdonald.
The Winter Wonderland Ice Rink is expected to be a major highlight, featuring a sprawling 6,005 square-foot rink that invites guests to skate "under the stars." Due to high demand and limited walk-up ticket availability, would-be skaters are advised to pre-purchase passes through the event's official website. The ice rink aside, the event offers more regular appearances by Santa Claus, including free visits on Sundays at The Post, a community and event space located at 26 N. Macdonald.
Adding a sprinkle of nostalgia to the mix, characters from "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" TV show will make appearances around the downtown area, providing ample opportunity for those coveted holiday selfies. For young fans looking to dine with Mr. Claus, "Breakfast with Santa" has expanded to three consecutive Saturdays, requiring advance ticket purchases as detailed on the Merry Main Street website.
The shopping spirit will be alive and well with Merry Main Street Marketplace setting up shop on November 29. Local vendors will showcase their crafts and culinary delights. Meanwhile, Mayor Giles is scheduled to deliver his recount of Mesa's historical "The Man Who Killed Santa Claus" tale, which will be captured for his acclaimed podcast "Its Always Cool in Mesa."
Transportation is also taken care of, with free parking offered throughout the area and complimentary light rail rides on select evenings.
