The East Bay Regional Park District marked a major milestone, its 90th anniversary, with a little pomp and circumstance at the Regional Parks Botanic Garden. State Senator Nancy Skinner and Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan were on hand to present resolutions recognizing the park district's contributions over nearly a century of preservation and public service.
The events of Wednesday, according to the East Bay Regional Park District's announcement, highlighted the park district's storied past, which began with a ballot measure in 1934 that established the district with a commanding 71 percent voter approval despite the economic challenges of the Great Depression. Today, the district spans 73 regional parks, boasting over 126,000 acres of parkland and a network of more than 1,330 miles of trails, and it stands as the largest regional park district in the nation.
Skinning down the budgetary details, Skinner and Bauer-Kahan have been staunch advocates for the park district in Sacramento, funneling substantial funds into the maintenance and expansion of the Parklands. Skinner secured $36 million to acquire and clean up Point Molate Regional Park and $10 million to address tree mortality, ensuring that the once flourishing landscapes don't turn into potential fire hazards. "Congratulations to the East Bay Regional Park District on its 90th anniversary," Senator Skinner said, as per East Bay Regional Park District.
Bauer-Kahan has not been idle either, having secured $4 million for creek restoration at Robert Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve and $3.5 million for wildfire protection equipment, including a new helicopter for the park district, essential for quick-fire response. "The East Bay Regional Park District has been a cornerstone of environmental preservation and public access for our community," Bauer-Kahan told the celebratory crowd, according to the East Bay Regional Park District's announcement, pointing to a long legacy of enhancing the quality of life for Californians and protecting the state's natural heritage.
