Tyrone Fergerson, a 53-year-old resident, matched five white balls in the Mega Millions drawing, winning him a staggering $5 million, according to a report from Michigan Lottery Connect. The winning ticket was purchased at the Chill Box Convenience Store, located at 29801 West 9 Mile Road in Farmington Hills.
Normally a $1 million prize, the inclusion of the Megaplier turned Fergerson's fortune fivefold. While checking the ticket in the dead of night, "I said a prayer and then looked up the winning numbers. I recognized them right away and was at a loss for words when I saw I won not $1 million, but $5 million! All I can say is winning is unbelievable and I feel humbled and grateful,” Fergerson said, as per ClickOnDetroit.
Upon learning of the win, Michigan Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli extended her congratulations to Fergerson, dubbing him "Michigan's newest millionaire." The Mega Millions game, which takes place every Tuesday and Friday evening, is a source of excitement for many, with tickets sold in 45 states including Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. According to CBS News Detroit, each play costs $2, with the opportunity to add the Megaplier feature for an additional dollar.
