The Senate Study Committee on the Preservation of Georgia’s Farmlands, led by Sen. Billy Hickman, has completed its work with a report outlining recommendations to support Georgia's agriculture. The committee held meetings in cities like Statesboro, Clarkesville, Moultrie, Cedartown, and Atlanta, where it heard from experts and local stakeholders on key issues such as tax policy, land management, disaster relief, and conservation.
According to the Georgia State Senate Press Office, Sen. Hickman said: "Our recommendations aim to ensure that Georgia’s farmland, the backbone of our economy and culture, is preserved for future generations. We must continue to invest in rural communities, provide critical disaster relief and support farmers by reducing tax burdens and expanding opportunities for education and workforce development. I’m grateful to the committee members, legislative staff and the many experts and community members who contributed to this effort."
After nearly four months of deliberations and public feedback, the Senate Study Committee's final report outlines practical steps for economic relief and rural progress. It recommends tax relief for farmers across Georgia and emphasizes prosperity for all farming communities. The committee also proposes a state-level financial support plan to assist communities impacted by Hurricane Helene.
The committee has supported federal policies, including a Farm Bill focused on conserving farmland. It also recommends state investment in workforce training programs to strengthen Georgia's rural economy and the inclusion of agricultural education in schools to prepare future farmers. Additionally, the committee calls for expanded veterinary services in rural areas to support livestock, dairy, and equine operations.
