Granite Bay Man, Dane Christoffer Thompson, Charged With Felonies for Role in January 6 Capitol RiotSource: U.S. District Court of DC

A Granite Bay resident and former school board candidate, Dane Christoffer Thompson, has been arrested on multiple charges related to the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol, officials announced. The 45-year-old faces two felony charges and an assortment of misdemeanor charges, including assaulting a police officer and engaging in disorderly conduct within the Capitol building. His arrest comes among a wave of over 1,500 individuals apprehended in connection to one of the darkest days in recent American history, as reported by CBS News Sacramento.

According to a report by ABC10, Thompson had attempted to make the leap from electrical engineer to school board trustee for the Eureka Union School District. His bid, however, did not culminate in a win. The criminal complaint against him details footage allegedly showing Thompson actively participating in the melee that breached police barricades during the violent insurrection. Prosecutors stated that images captured Thompson as he attempted to wrest a bike rack from an officer and lunged toward law enforcement, concretizing his role in the turmoil.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California has indicated that Thompson's arrest was executed at his home on Friday. This was followed by a first court appearance on Monday. CBS News Sacramento notes that Thompson initially joined the "Stop the Steal Rally" in the nation's capital before the crowd he was part of surged toward the Capitol, leading to violent clashes with police.

Thompson's identification as a participant in the Capitol siege was allegedly assisted by a website used by his family to document their travels, as well as through his travel history obtained from airlines and from personal items like his watch and wedding band. When investigators approached him on Nov. 6, Thompson is said to have been unwilling to speak and requested they leave his property, as per ABC10. He is set to be tried within the jurisdiction of the D.C. circuit following his arraignment in Sacramento.
