A tragic incident occurred on Sunday when a vehicle crash resulted in a fatality in Grant Parish. James W. Bennett, 60, was pronounced dead at the scene after his 1992 GMC left Louisiana Highway 8 and collided with a tree, as reported by the Louisiana State Police Troop E. The crash, which occurred east of Pollock, is still under active investigation to determine its cause.
Louisiana State Police responded to the crash site at approximately 6:30 a.m., after Bennett's vehicle, for reasons not yet clear, failed to remain on the pavement. It veered off to travel down an embankment before making an impact with a tree. According to authorities, Bennett was not using a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
Routine toxicology samples were collected at the scene and will be analyzed as part of the ongoing investigation. This step is standard procedure in severe accidents like this to rule out impairment as a potential factor behind the crash. The results are pending and will provide more insight into the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event.
The Louisiana State Police have taken the opportunity to remind motorists of the critical importance of seat belt use. Proper restraint is a simple yet highly effective means to drastically reduce the risk of death and minimize injuries in vehicle crashes. "Always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained can often mean the difference between life and death," as stated in the Louisiana State Police Troop E news release.
