The Havre de Grace community is collectively mourning the loss of Jai'den Winchester, a 14-year-old student and quarterback on the Havre de Grace High Junior Varsity football team. Winchester was tragically shot and killed in Aberdeen following a Halloween party. A vigil saw several hundred people gather to remember the young athlete as candles and pictures adorned the area, creating a heartfelt memorial. "He grew into his maturity and then again, as the quarterback...you're the leader, so that means a lot. They were proud of that," family friend Malik Allston stated, as per CBS News Baltimore.
Antonio Blackwell, Winchester's teammate and friend, spoke highly of him, saying Winchester would be remembered as a role model who was always willing to help others. "After practice, we'd go watch the youth play," Blackwell shared. He also expressed a personal sentiment, "If I could talk to him, I'd tell him I love him," as reported by CBS News Baltimore. In a grim turn of events, it was revealed that the firearm used was registered to the suspect's father. The 16-year-old, identified as Kevin Kinsey, is currently facing murder charges and is being charged as an adult with offenses that include first and second-degree murder, assault, and reckless endangerment.
According to court documents detailed by FOX Baltimore, the deadly incident occurred after a disagreement inside a vehicle. Kinsey had been seen with the gun at the Halloween party before the shooting took place.
