Beachgoers at Kekaha Beach received a warning from local authorities yesterday when a tiger shark, estimated to be 10 feet in length, was spotted near the shoreline, prompting a pause in ocean activities. The Kaua‘i Ocean Safety Bureau (OSB) issued an immediate advisory to avoid swimming or engaging in other ocean activities at the beach until deemed safe.
The sighting, which took place at the surf break known as Intersections, did not result in any reported injuries, but the presence of the shark feeding close to shore raised concerns for public safety, with OSB officials taking the precaution of posting warning signs in the vicinity, they will continue monitoring the area for the time being.
In response to the incident, lifeguards stationed at Kekaha Beach will reassess the situation this afternoon to determine if the warning signs should remain or whether regular activities can resume. The public is encouraged to stay informed on the latest updates which will be made available as new information comes to light.
