Kingsport is about to bask in the limelight of inclusivity with an upcoming talent show that is more than just a passing nod to diversity. The Parks and Recreation Department of the city is rolling out the red carpet, not just for the next singing sensation or dance enthusiasts, but also for individuals boasting unique abilities that may have otherwise floundered without a stage. Slated for November 23 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the V.O. Dobbins, Sr. Complex, this isn't your average talent spectacle.
The event, which will take place in the Douglass Room of V.O. Dobbins located at 301 Louis Street, opens its doors to participants ages 5 and older. According to the Kingsport website, registration is crucial as it gives the organizers a headcount – ostensibly so that every act gets its moment under the spotlight.
This talent show is part of the A.S.P.I.R.E. initiative, an acronym that has more substance than just a good backronym – Adaptive: Sports Programs Inclusive Recreation Experiences. This program champions adaptive programs for those with disabilities or physical limitations, ensuring an egalitarian playing field, or in this case – stage. Renee Ensor, Program Coordinator, summed up the ethos of the event in a statement, "We have many people in our A.S.P.I.R.E. program who can dance and sing, play a musical instrument or play sports. This event is aimed at them, to let them show off their amazing talents," lavishing praise on the multi-talented individuals the program supports.
Make no mistake, this evening is gearing up to be a showcase of talent, but also a testament to Kingsport's dedication to inclusivity. Ensor promised an "enjoyable evening, filled with some great performances," so expect dedicated practitioners of the arts, unfettered joy, and maybe, just maybe, a story or two that tugs at the old heartstrings. The event is free to attend, but they're nudging everyone to RSVP via their website or through the Connect Kingsport app – just search for that "talent show" in the CivicRec link and let them know you're coming.
