Las Cruces is marking World Usability Day with an innovative approach, as Thomas Branigan Memorial Library opens its doors to the public for a workshop on 3-D printing of assistive devices. This free session, happening on Nov. 14, aims to empower individuals with disabilities by utilizing the latest technology in additive manufacturing.
With an emphasis on creating a more inclusive society, the library's event is set to display a range of 3-D printed devices designed to aid those facing daily challenges. "Items includes aids to hold a pen or open a can of soda, or make buckling a seatbelt easier," as detailed by the City of Las Cruces. Beyond exhibiting these innovations, the library will provide access to a repository of patent-free files, allowing for the replication and customization of the assistive tools.
Set for 1-2 p.m. on a Thursday at the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, located at 200 E. Picacho Ave., the event is both educational and practical. Library staff will not only showcase the potential of these revolutionary devices but also guide participants through the process of creating one using the Makerspace 3-D printer. This hands-on experience is designed to offer an introduction to the possibilities 3-D printing holds for personalizing and crafting support for those with disabilities.
