If you're living on or near Spitz Street in Las Cruces, prepare for a temporary inconvenience as the city addresses some necessary infrastructure updates. A scheduled water outage is expected to impact the area from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday. During this window, city workers will be busy replacing a fire hydrant at the crossroads of Spitz Street and Rena Mae Court, according to the City of Las Cruces.
The outage, which will pause water flow, is confirmed to potentially affect residents around Tonja Court and Rena Mae Court. Working to enhance public safety with new fire hydrant installations, the water department inadvertently becomes a temporary disruptor in the residents' daily routines. Councilor Johana Bencomo, representing District 4, oversees the area where these upgrades are set to take place.
Following the completion of the work, homeowners might face another minor issue when they turn their taps back on. City officials have warned that there may be discoloration in the water due to stirred-up iron, manganese, and calcium deposits. Despite the likely rusty hue, the water is "safe to drink," but the city recommends holding off on laundry duty until the water runs clear to avoid staining clothes.
For residents planning their day around the outage, these four hours without water service can be seen as a forced pause, a small price for ensuring that in moments of crisis, the very fabric of public safety, fire hydrants in this case, stands ready and robust. Nevertheless, the inconvenience is a short-term trade-off for long-term gains in community safety and infrastructure reliability.
