The City of Las Cruces Financial Services Department has landed a major accolade for its fiscal responsibility, securing the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA)'s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the fiscal year commencing July 1. The honor, as highlighted by the city's announcement, is in recognition of their high-quality budget documents which are said to meet both the National Advisory Council on State and Local Budgeting guidelines and the GFOA’s best practices on budgeting, according to the City of Las Cruces.
Recognized among some 1,800 governments for their commitment to transparency, the City of Las Cruces joined an elite group who have demonstrated excellence with their budget documents as tools for financial planning, policy documentation, operation guidance, and public communication. To achieve such an award, the criteria demand documents that not only adhere to standards but also use them as way more than just a statement of accounts.
In parallel to fiscal recognitions, the city has made strides in bolstering its law enforcement initiatives. The local program named 'Not in Vain' recorded a significant uptick in engagement, with 330 arrests made and more than 1200 citations issued, as detailed by the city's recent press. The program thrives with a focus on clamping down offenses and enhancing community safety, signifying a no-tolerance stance against violations that disrupt civic harmony.
