Commuters in Arizona are bracing for a major closure as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced that the southbound I-17 ramp to eastbound I-10 will be inaccessible starting from 10 p.m. this Friday, November 15, through to 4 a.m. Monday, November 18. The shutdown is part of the ongoing pavement marking work that's part of the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project. During this timeframe, the eastbound I-10 will also see a reduction in lanes, with traffic being squeezed down to just two lanes between the stretches of I-17 and US 60.
Motorists should anticipate additional ramp closures, which are set to occur concurrently with the main shutdown. The southbound I-17 on-ramps at Seventh Avenue and Seventh Street will be shuttered to traffic. Similarly, the eastbound I-10 on-ramps at 24th, 32nd, and 40th streets and the off-ramp at 40th Street are slated for closure. As a suggested alternative, ADOT is directing drivers to use the eastbound I-10 on- and off-ramps at Broadway Road instead.
As commuters plan their detours, ADOT recommends the following route: take the westbound I-10 to eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway), then head south on Loop 101 (Price Freeway), and merge onto westbound US 60 or Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) to reconnect with eastbound I-10. In light of the closures, motorists are advised to allow for extra travel time and to consider these designated detours to bypass the affected areas.
It should be noted that the transportation schedules are subject to change, often due to weather conditions and other unexpected events. To stay informed on the most current traffic updates, ADOT urges drivers to download TheCurve, the free mobile app dedicated to the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project, or to visit the Arizona Department of Transportation website.
The improvements are part of the Maricopa Association of Governments' Regional Transportation Plan, funded by a half-cent sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004. The upgrades aim to cut travel times on I-10 during peak hours, improve airport access, promote car sharing and transit use, and support regional growth.
