In a move that highlights the importance of inclusive employment practices, the Maple Grove Police Department has been honored for its endeavors in providing opportunities for individuals with disabilities. The commendation came from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development's Vocational Rehabilitation Services. Acknowledging the department's commitment, the agency presented the police department with a plaque, in recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), celebrated in October.
The theme for this year's NDEAM, "Access to Good Jobs for All," encapsulates the ethos behind the award. Vocational Rehabilitation Services, in its quest to uplift integrated and competitive employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, singled out Maple Grove Police Department for its collaborative approach. Placement Coordinator with Vocational Rehabilitation Services Frank Herd nominated the department, expressing, "I submitted MGPD for consideration and you were selected for recognition for your collaboration in providing such a rewarding work experience for Nicole," according to the police department's social media post.
Nicole, the student employee referenced by Herd, worked at the police department during the 2023-2024 school year. Her tenure included a variety of office tasks, which she managed to complete with the assistance of a job coach. Nicole's involvement wasn't confined to the clerical realm; she also actively participated in community events, and the Teen Police Academy, and got involved with the police department's Explorers program, a notable effort that speaks to the department's dedication to creating a varied and inclusive work environment.
As the year unwound, Nicole celebrated her graduation in 2024, marking not just a personal milestone but also evidencing the success of Maple Grove Police Department’s attempt to offer productive work experiences to members of the community with disabilities. Reflective of Nicole's growth and contributions, the plaque represents more than mere recognition; it is a testament to community partnership and the transformative power of inclusive employment. The Maple Grove Police Department has set an example worth emulation, one that reverberates beyond plaques and month-long observances, serving as an active reminder of our collective responsibility for “Access to Good Jobs for All," in keeping with the spirit of NDEAM 2024.
