Maricopa County is preparing to celebrate National Take A Hike Day on November 17, encouraging residents to explore its extensive park system. The event offers a chance to enjoy the county's diverse landscapes, including the Sonoran Desert and regional parks like Lake Pleasant and San Tan Mountain. Jack Sellers, Chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, emphasized the benefits of hiking, saying, "Hiking offers us a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, breathe fresh air, and enjoy the beauty of our natural Sonoran Desert landscapes."
Jennifer Waller, Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Director, welcomed cooler temperatures that make hiking more comfortable. "After months of telling park visitors to hike during the early morning or evening hours to avoid the heat, we can now say, take a hike!" she said. With over 615 miles of trails for hiking, running, biking, and horseback riding, visitors are encouraged to explore the outdoors and join the 100 Miles in 100 Days Challenge, according to the Maricopa County.
Maricopa County offers trails for all skill levels on National Take A Hike Day, with a focus on physical activity and environmental care. Hikers should stay on marked trails, clean up after themselves, and follow Leave No Trace principles. It's important to inform someone of your plans, carry enough water, wear proper footwear, and not hike alone. A cell phone and map are also recommended.
