Memphis is celebrating a tech-infused victory as the "Byte the Blight" team scooped the grand prize at the City of Memphis Hackathon for their innovative approach to eradicating the urban decay plaguing their community. Utilizing forward-thinking technology, their solution aims to activate a trifecta of government agencies, residents, and nonprofit organizations in a collaborative effort to rejuvenate the city.
Over the weekend, an assembly of seventy participants forming 14 teams engaged in a focused 36-hour dash to devise strategies that could potentially propel the city forward in addressing some of its most pressing civic issues. The challenges on the table were ambitious: diminishing urban blight, bolstering transportation for workforce development, and integrating AI into Smart City technologies. Such competitions are more than a simple show of competitive prowess—they're a reflection of a city yearning for progress and innovation.
The hackathon staged its problem-solving marathon at the University of Memphis FedEx Institute of Technology between November 15 and 17, as per the City of Memphis. City executives who have long wrestled with these community issues pinned their hopes on the hackathon to bring forward actionable, creative strategies.
Gratified by the surge of ingenuity and dedication on display, Memphis's Chief Operating Officer Antonio Adams expressed esteem for the participatory spirit, "I appreciate how these team members dug deep into the City to understand our problems and develop creative solutions. Hopefully, we can implement some of their ideas to improve our citizen’s lives," he told the City of Memphis. It is a sentiment that echoes throughout the corridors of the Memphis administrative buildings—a shared optimism for a city on the cusp of transformation.
The Hackathon was backed by Innovate Memphis working alongside a network comprised of the City of Memphis, Memphis Technology Foundation, BDPA, City Leadership, CodeCrew, Epicenter, Midsouth Makers, StartCo, and Tech901. Vital support came through sponsorships from such entities as Malasri Engineering, Blue Note Bourbon, Blue Suede Networks, Ting, Orion, Adams Keegan, and the FedEx Institute of Technology.
